Le Albere: An Urban Regeneration Project in Northern Italy

Le Albere is an urban regeneration project on the site of the former Michelin tyre factory in the city of Trento in northern Italy. It was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, who is also coordinating the project.

The site lies on the banks of the River Adige and covers roughly 110 stremmata (about 11 hectares), and the buildings to be developed there will total more than 300,000 cubic metres. This new, modern district of the city aims to make use of the most innovative and environmentally friendly technological systems available.

The functional programme for the area will include apartments, offices, shops, cultural venues, conference centres and community facilities, while 5 stremmata (0.5 hectares) will be set aside for a large, leafy park.

Forty-five percent of Le Albere will be devoted to housing (around 44,000 square metres), 30% to offices, 15% to public buildings (a science museum and a multipurpose centre) and 10% to retail.
