As we reported in an earlier article, in 2011, 2012 and 2013 ZEON is organising an action-research project entitled PUBLIC SPACE in cities across Greece.
Between October 2012 and April 2013, ZEON is running a photographic event in the city of CORFU on the question: “What pleases or bothers you most as you move around the public space of your city every day?”
ZEON collected 460 photographs from 28 residents and visitors of Corfu, capturing and commenting on views of the city and moments from the participants’ daily lives: what they like and what they don’t, including buildings, streets, pavements, walls, parks, trees, beaches, means of transport, private cars and public transport, social life and so on.
As part of this project, and with the support of OLKE S.A. and the Technical Chamber of Greece (Corfu branch), the photographs submitted will be shown in an exhibition at the Municipal Gallery of Corfu, and talks and discussions on PUBLIC SPACE will take place at the premises of OLKE in the port of Corfu.
The aim of the project is to outline common problems in the management of public space, as well as corresponding positive images of the urban landscape. It is a collective initiative and proposal for improving our everyday lives.
These images refer, directly or indirectly, to the social, political, economic, cultural and civic environment, and pose pertinent questions about the conditions of contemporary life and, in many cases, the need to reshape, redesign and reuse public space.
Our cities are waiting for us to care for them and take the initiative.
