When Lighting Becomes Art…

With the kind support of AKRIPHOS, Eleni Panouklia‘s exhibition of paintings, sculptures and installations, titled “Transmitting Codes”, was realised at the Q box gallery.

The artist believes that what we see as an image does not always contain the whole truth, and that a relationship or communication exists between all things, even though it is not always perceived. She set out to express the “secrets” of nature. As a development of her earlier work, she used purely painterly and sculptural media as her primary materials, incorporating into them “foreign” elements such as thread and optical fibres.

Wishing to capture the idea that everything in nature has a particular power, which acts in a specific way on other bodies, Eleni Panouklia found in optical fibres the ideal medium for conveying the magic of attraction and repulsion between bodies. In two especially distinctive works, she used optical fibres to depict energy, what we call a field, although it is not visible to the human eye.

The installation with the tree and the human figure: the tree, a drawing in permanent marker at almost natural size, develops a repeating pattern. Using optical fibres, it is projected out from the flat surface of the “wall”. The tree itself emits energy, at once dark and luminous, like the very structure of nature. The human figure facing it stands bound (or repelled?) by the energy the tree emits.

The second work consists of two drawings, each measuring 134 x 134 cm, made with permanent marker and correction fluid. They give the impression of a living organism, as they change appearance from day to day owing to the way the materials behave in relation to one another. One is drawn on the front of the PVC and the other on the back, like a positive and a negative, exactly as happens with magnetic fields. They work in a complementary way, yet each retains its own functional and aesthetic autonomy. The work shows us that there is what is visible, the real image, and what is not visible, a complementary image of the same thing, so that together they give the true information or image of it.

The projects used optical fibres from Advanced Fiber Optics, which is represented in Greece by AKRIPHOS.

Through its kind sponsorship of this exhibition, AKRIPHOS demonstrated that lighting is not merely functional but can also contribute to art.
