TAF presents Shadows March Through, an exhibition by Kati Mahrt and Michalis Arfaras. It opens on Wednesday 15 February and runs until 15 March 2012.
Shadows have always preoccupied us. When our lives were in more direct contact with nature, shadows served as a tool that showed us direction or helped us measure time. At the same time, however, they were dark and enigmatic phenomena for human beings, and that is still true today. Myths about shadows are now an integral part of our lives. Plato’s allegory of the cave describes human existence as a theatre of shadows.
Over time, the shadow has lost none of its magic as a metaphor for existence and non-existence, for the real and the apparent. The shadow’s immaterial yet dark character, and its opposition to light, make it a symbol of the intangible and of the in-between space, and a point of contact with our dead ancestors. The ever-increasing artificial lighting of the world and our potential dreamscape dazzle us and eliminate shadows.
The images and objects of Kati Mahrt and Michalis Arfaras show different approaches to this theme. They are in dialogue with one another and seek to offer a proposition in confrontation with the phenomenon. Just like shadows themselves, the works contain more than one truth.

Opening: Wednesday 15 February 2012, 20:30
