Curated by Els Hanappe & Lazaros Siakos
The Hilton Athens, in collaboration with curators Els Hanappe and Lazaros Siakos, is pleased to announce the opening of a sculpture exhibition by Stathis Alexopoulos in the hotel’s Lobby and Aethrion lounge. At the Hilton Athens, Stathis Alexopoulos presents a series of new sculptures that include, among others, the Venus de Milo, elegant horse heads, guitars and a motorcycle.
His interest in design is also evident in the sculptural tables and the Isis chair. By choosing everyday functional objects and classical subjects, Stathis Alexopoulos turns them into contemporary symbols. He experiments constantly with new, pioneering materials that allow him to create different metal surfaces. On the basic structures of the objects he imposes a personal style, using forms such as strips and straps that create “knots” and recall the ancient technique of mummification. The result is a redefinition of the object: its original form is preserved as a memory, unaltered by time, while a contemporary perspective gives it a new identity with a strong artistic character.
Stathis Alexopoulos was born in Athens in 1976, where he lives and works. He studied sculpture at the School of Fine Arts of Panormos, Tinos and at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Fine and Applied Arts. He graduated with distinction in 2009 and was nominated for the Michelis scholarship. He has taken part in many group exhibitions and has won awards in numerous Greek art competitions as well as at international sculpture symposia. His works can be found in public spaces in several large municipalities, as well as at the Icarus Air Force Academy in Tatoi.
