ReMap3

An international contemporary art programme in the Kerameikos – Metaxourgeio area (12/9 – 30/10/2011).

ReMap3

ReMap is an international contemporary art programme, open to the public, held every two years in the Kerameikos – Metaxourgeio (KM) area in coordination with the Athens Biennale.

It is organised by the non-profit organisation ReMapKM, which was founded with the sole aim of curating, producing, creating and promoting contemporary cultural activities, with an emphasis on the coexistence of Greek and international art in the centre of Athens, starting from the Kerameikos – Metaxourgeio (KM) area.

The aim is to contribute to the creation of a contemporary cultural identity for Athens, with the active support of contemporary art when it develops within the fabric of the city, making it accessible to the city’s residents and visitors.

ReMap 3 takes place this year for the third time and strengthens its international character, as it becomes a meeting point for more than 250 artists, art historians and curators from all over the world, as well as from the local artistic community of Kerameikos – Metaxourgeio. They are taking part in 30 independent projects and in 25 exhibitions by Greek and foreign galleries of distinction.

The more than 50 exhibitions hosted at ReMap3 offer visitors a different way of exploring the Kerameikos – Metaxourgeio neighbourhood, which is developing into a contemporary cultural quarter in the centre of Athens. There, the new City of Athens Art Gallery, the Greek Film Archive, Kunsthalle Athena, the galleries The Breeder and Rebecca Camhi, the cultural organisation ATOPOS Contemporary Visual Culture (ATOPOS CVC), BIOS, XYZ Outlet, E.D.O, and Frown Tails coexist with a large number of theatre stages, such as the new experimental stage Synergeio and the internationally acclaimed Attis Theatre, which has been in the area for the past 20 years.

All of these venues coexist for the 6 weeks of the event, alongside the remaining ReMap3 exhibitions, which are temporarily housed in unused spaces in the neighbourhood. These differ from the “classic” exhibition spaces of museums, foyers or galleries, and include 1970s apartments, neoclassical buildings, courtyards, vacant plots and even balconies in the area.

A feature of this year’s programme, too, is the presence of many young artists from all over the world, as well as organisations presenting their work in Greece for the first time. This strengthens the momentum ReMap has built up so far, as it is now established as a platform for showcasing noteworthy young artists and organisations on the international contemporary art scene.

Alongside the main exhibition programme, a host of performances, creative workshops and events will take place in various venues in the area, as the “stroll” through ReMap3 radiates out across 85 city blocks.

ReMap3’s central information point will operate in Avdi Square, in the courtyard of an old house. The open-air space has been designed by the distinguished architecture office ANTONAS OFFICE, with the kind sponsorship of IKEA, and will also serve as a “cell” for work and study for any interested group that wishes to use it. The space will have free internet access and a temporary art bookshop and, as with the ReMap3 exhibitions, admission is free.

ReMap3 is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture & Tourism and the City of Athens, and is part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Athens Every Week programme.
