As part of its accompanying events, the 15th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival presents the photography exhibition “Thessaloniki 101”, which will run from 16 to 24 March 2013 at the Thessaloniki Center of Contemporary Art (Warehouse B1, Port). The exhibition is organised by the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, with the support of the State Museum of Contemporary Art, the Thessaloniki Center of Contemporary Art and the Embassy of Canada in Greece.
The “Thessaloniki 101” photography exhibition features work produced in the creative photography workshop for young people of the same name, which was set up on the initiative of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. The workshop, held online in February 2013, was taught by the Iranian-Canadian photographer Babak Salari.
The 14 participants, all of whom live in Thessaloniki and work in photography, mostly as amateurs, produced a series of works centred on the evolution of the city they live in. Monuments, urban landscapes, the Jewish presence and its importance to the city’s commercial development, the Ottoman and Byzantine heritage, but also major social issues, such as the current economic crisis and its consequences, the coexistence of many different ethnic groups, and their integration into, or exclusion from, society in the multicultural setting of present-day Thessaloniki, are just some of the themes the artists focused on.
Exhibition opening: Saturday 16 March 2013, 12:00
