Festival of Lights

Together with Lyon... By Dimitris Nasikas

Festival of Lights

It was by visiting the “Fête des Lumières” that I came to know the ‘Festival of Lights’. Since 1852, the people of Lyon have celebrated the Virgin Mary by lighting candles in the windows of their homes, and to this day the city’s theatre keeps this tradition alive in everyone’s memory. Candlelight is a romantic presence, one that brings nothing but calm and warmth.

In this city, one might say, light and romance belong to it. Light embraces the Renaissance buildings, writing its own fairy tales on them, staging its own performances, creating its own seasons. These are nights when light paints the city with stars on the river and luminous daisies adorn the parks. Moments when light, art and romance envelop the city.

In closing, I would like to point out that, unlike the video projections, which were flawless in both design and execution, I found many of the other lighting projects lacking. Let us not forget that behind every lighting project, the dominant factors in a polished result are the method and the quality of construction, so that the original designs and the vision of each lighting designer are rendered accurately.
