The Acropolis Museum will celebrate International Museum Day and European Museum Night on Wednesday 18 May 2011. The Museum will be open from 8 am to midnight, with free admission. The Museum’s restaurant and shops will keep the same hours.
By 18 May, the Acropolis Museum will have updated the information it provides for visitors. In addition to the new labels for the exhibits, twenty-five large glass panels will mark out periods and sections, giving historical information, pointing out the distinctive features of particular periods and underlining the role that works of ancient art played in the societies of their time. Two further large panels will present: a) the materials of the sculptures and the tools used to work them, and b) the colours of the sculptures, with samples of mineral pigments and tests on marble.
On 18 May, a new programme will also begin, designed to showcase the Museum’s precious inscriptions and to help visitors become familiar with reading and understanding them.
That evening, at 8:30 pm, the Museum will host the Athens Symphony Orchestra in its forecourt, which will perform works by Beethoven, Musorgsky, Fauré and Borodin, with D. Vezyroglou as piano soloist. The City of Athens Mixed Choir, under St. Beris, will also take part. The symphony orchestra will be conducted by E. Kalkanis.
