Castle Rock Festival

Design and execution of an architectural video projection at the historic castle of Ioannina.

Castle Rock Festival

From 22 to 24 July, Ioannina hosted the Castle Rock Festival, by now an established event for the city. This year it featured an “artistic touch” on the city’s castle that was pioneering by Greek standards, curated by Stathis Mitsios.

Mr Mitsios undertook the study and development of an architectural video projection on the castle, with the aim of showcasing the wall and giving it a striking artistic texture for the days of the festival.

The study included detailed measurement and design of the site in CAD, so that the surface could be divided into three separate “projection frames” and all the dimensions of the structure (height, width, depth) could be put to use.

The next stage was video editing, which resulted in an 80-minute production with around 17 thematic sections.

This was fitted to the surface of the structure and projected as a loop.

To achieve a final projection 42 metres long and 10 metres high, three powerful 10,000-lumen Barco projectors with ultra-wide-angle lenses were used, in order to maximise the frame while minimising the projection distance.

One particular difficulty for the project was that there was no chance to rehearse the projection; the only opportunity was the day before the festival, when the projectors would be aligned and stabilised.

That alone would determine whether the design and study of the project had been right. The total time spent on study, design, video editing and implementation came to almost three months.

Lighting design for the castle’s spaces and exhibitions

For the general lighting of the festival’s main entrance, 60 high-efficiency RGB boards (each with three LEDs) with a 120-degree beam angle were used, together with 6 Lumidrive colourdrive power supplies.

The light “embraced the whole space” and the aesthetic result was enchanting. It is worth noting that this installation lit a space measuring 4x4x42m while consuming less than 300 watts of power!

In the video below, you can see the very interesting result live:
