Athens Video Art Festival 2011

Greece's International Festival of Digital Arts and New Media, 20–22 May at TECHNOPOLIS, City of Athens.

Athens Video Art Festival 2011

The International Festival of Digital Arts and New Media of Greece, the Athens Video Art Festival, continues its journey through the world of contemporary culture and new technologies and returns for a seventh consecutive year.

Standing by its core principles and building on seven years of history, the Athens Video Art Festival represents Greece internationally. Year after year it presents as complete a picture as possible of the global art scene, with the aim of familiarising the Greek public with new media and connecting the dots on the international art map.

As part of its programme, the festival has had the pleasure of presenting a series of tributes to some of the most iconic figures in the art world, such as Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Bill Vorn and Andy Warhol, in collaboration with international and Greek organisations. Through the annual open call for entries in its seven programme categories (Video Art – Video Installations – Installation Art – Animation – Digital Image – Performance Art – Web Art), artists from all over the world have the chance to present their work, creating a platform for dialogue among all the expressions of digital culture.

Taking its cue from the famous quote “The future is now” by the Korean artist Nam June Paik, this year’s Athens Video Art Festival champions the constant redefinition of the positions, goals and values of everyday life. It invites artists and audiences alike to come together as fellow travellers on a singular journey towards the future.

This year’s programme will present works from the seven official categories. Visitors will also have the chance to discover eleven of the most notable digital arts festivals from six European countries, and to engage with one of the most groundbreaking art movements, FLUXUS, through the tribute entitled “Fluxus is an attitude”.

In support of the role and character of the Athens Video Art Festival, and in recognition of the work of contemporary artists, this year’s programme is enriched by the special category “Believe the hype”. The halls of Technopolis will host works from all categories, by artists who have stood out between the previous edition and today, curated by the festival’s production team.

Finally, with the aim of fostering continuity and communication among the constituent elements of art, and guided by the phrase “Music is the healing force of the universe”, the Athens Video Art Festival 2011 includes a special music line-up in its programme, inaugurating a second, inner stage for the first time in its history.

Opening hours: 16:00 – 04:00
