5th International ART4MORE Festival – ART without DISCRIMINATION

An annual international festival marking World Mental Health Day

Organiser: K.S.D.E.O. “EDRA”
WHEN: Friday 7, Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October 2011
WHERE: The HUB Events, 5 Alkmini St., Kato Petralona, Kerameikos station

The International Festival “ART4MORE”, organised by the NGO “EDRA”, takes place every year to mark World Mental Health Day (10 October). It is dedicated to linking Art with Mental Health and with pressing social issues, offering a different approach and an alternative understanding of health as a way of life. ART4MORE sets out to combat the main “allies” of the negative attitude that prevails towards people with mental illness: prejudice, lack of information and stigma. In this way, mental health through art sends a message of hope, of getting to know socially vulnerable groups and of their social integration.

The 5th International ART4MORE Festival comprises two exhibitions and events that explore, scientifically and aesthetically, the ways in which space affects and shapes human life and art. The two exhibitions are complemented by talks, screenings, performances and live awareness-raising concerts.

The planned programme includes the following:

Exhibition and Conference: “Therapeutic Architecture, Landscape and the Therapeutic Garden”

A conference and an exhibition of projects in Therapeutic Architecture (hospitals, boarding homes, guesthouses, day centres, sheltered apartments and homes for people with disabilities), Therapeutic Landscape Architecture and Therapeutic Horticulture. The conference will take the form of a round table with representatives of the state, organisations and professionals from Greece and abroad, such as Ms Upali Nanda, a member of the Research Committee for the Society of Arts in Healthcare; Ms Annette Ridenour, Director of Research at American Art Resources; figures from Israel, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom; Dr Evangelia Chrysikou (architect-engineer and hospital planner, Greek representative of the International Academy for Design & Health); Dr Julia Tzortzi (landscape architect, forester and environmental scientist, Director of the Management and Administration Body of the “Antonis Tritsis” Environmental Awareness Park); Mr Michalis Maniadakis (floriculture technician and consultant in ecological farming); and others.

Conference date: Friday 7 October 2011, 4.00–9.00 pm. A reception will follow.

Exhibition by Those Who Draw in the Margins

The second exhibition and event showcases intricate sketches on blank pages, in the margins of notes, on post-its, in moleskines, in diaries and on any other surface on which a drawing can be born spontaneously and unplanned. People with mental illness are also taking part in the exhibition. The project reflects the return of contemporary artistic creation to simpler, more experimental and more primal forms of art. Its aims are: to provide a place of exhibition for ephemeral art that is created and lost because it has no accepted or polished form; to reveal the direct relationship of this art with the subconscious and with our psyche; and to connect the sketches with the personal moments and circumstances in which they were made, in the everyday lives of their creators.

Part of the “Drawings in the Margins” exhibition will be a “work in progress” and will evolve through works created on site during the festival, in collaboration with the “Creative Waves” of the Union of Graphic Designers of Greece.

In cooperation with the Psychiatric Hospital of Attica, the 5th ART4MORE also pays tribute to “Alternative Therapeutic Means in Mental Health for reducing medication and relapses”.
