Wooden Mosaic by 403architecture

Wood taken from a room's ceiling is transformed into the raw material for its floor, which is clad in a wooden mosaic.

Wooden Mosaic by 403architecture

The Japanese studio 403architecture has created a wooden composition for the floor of a room in the Atsumi apartment in Japan, using pieces of wood stripped from its ceiling.

The client was a young couple who wanted the bedroom of their time-worn apartment in the city of Hamamatsu renovated. As part of the overall renovation of the home, the ceiling was dismantled, which left a good number of pieces of wood. This gave rise to the idea of reusing them – in other words, recycling them – to create an original floor.

The pieces of wood vary in both size and color. They were laid completely at random to form the wooden mosaic, resulting in a surface that may not be perfectly smooth and even, but certainly has a distinctive character.

The team chose not to polish the floor; it was simply sanded lightly to level out the larger protrusions of the irregular pieces of wood.

The floor is highly resistant to wear and particularly effective in terms of sound insulation.
