London-based architecture practice Levitate Architects specialises in the restoration of historic buildings and the renovation of interiors. The practice’s core philosophy is an approach to architecture that is in harmony with the needs of modern life and the modern urban landscape.
In terms of design, Levitate Architects are interested in “creating spaces” that are as functional as they are pleasant for their clients to use.
One project they have recently completed is the renovation of an apartment in a Victorian mansion in London. The space was modernised with simple, clean lines, and enriched with materials and architectural details that highlight the existing Victorian features.
The architectural team had to be inventive with its design solutions in order to save space in the 60 sq m apartment.
The standout feature is the internal staircase, designed and built entirely to provide access to an existing attic room. To save space, it also doubles as a bookcase. The oak treads, which act as shelves, hold a large collection of books that adds colour and enriches the space aesthetically.
A skylight in the attic ceiling, right at the top of the staircase, bathes the space in natural light. The result is a striking, functional dual-purpose structure that adds character to the architectural whole and serves as the focal point of the apartment.
