The Slussen area is one of the central districts of Stockholm and, since 1935, has been a major traffic hub linking the Baltic Sea with Lake Mälaren.
The aim of the project is to upgrade the heart of the city into a modern urban neighbourhood, turning it into a new, dynamic urban destination.

The design by Foster + Partners, in collaboration with architect Berg Arkitektkontor, creates new public spaces for visitors, such as pedestrian walkways and cycle paths with access to the waterfront, along with new buildings, restaurants and bars. It will also upgrade the existing infrastructure to minimise the risk of flooding and modernise the existing facilities, creating a new, modern transport hub.

The catalyst for this “effort” is the urgent need to replace much of the deteriorated water and transport infrastructure.
The city of Stockholm is seizing the opportunity to turn this important part of the capital into a new, modern destination, striking a balance between vehicles and pedestrians, with the ultimate aim of attracting more visitors.
Work on the project began in 2008 and will be completed in 2022.
