Metropol Parasol in Seville

A striking project by J. MAYER H. Architects for the redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnacíon in Seville.

Metropol Parasol in Seville

On the Plaza de la Encarnacíon, where a building site stood for the last 6 years, the “Metropol Parasol” has risen since April 2011.

It is the work of the Berlin-based architecture practice J. MAYER H., and it is emerging as the new trademark of the beautiful city of Seville. It has already become an important part of the Spanish city’s identity, while also strengthening its role as one of the most interesting cultural destinations in the world.

The “Metropol Parasol” makes use of the site of the Plaza de la Encarnacíon to turn it into a new, contemporary urban centre. It is a unique urban environment within the dense medieval fabric of Seville, offering scope for a range of activities: historical tours, shopping and entertainment.

The complex houses an archaeological museum, a farmers’ market and numerous bars and restaurants, both beneath and inside the “umbrella” formed by the striking beam structures, as well as a spectacular open-air, elevated “plaza”.

The “Metropol Parasol” has been recognised as one of the largest and most innovative timber constructions, with a polyurethane coating. The canopies covering the archaeological excavation site stand out as a contemporary landmark, redefining the distinctive relationship between the historic and modern sides of the city.

Its facilities bring life to the plaza and boost activity there, for locals and tourists alike.
