Kokkini Svoura, in Chalandri

A café-bar where familiarity and surprise alternate in the décor, and DIY constructions take centre stage.

Kokkini Svoura, in Chalandri

Chalandri’s “homely café” has long accustomed us to design surprises, but recently something completely different has sprung up in the back of Svoura: a metal tree with a bench in its shade.

Despina, Kostis and Dionysis, the three owners of Svoura, were looking for a way to break up the spatial monotony of the rectangular dining room. So they pooled their ideas and left the design to designer Alexandros Didaskalou.

“I drew it by hand first, and it was digitised afterwards. I deliberately chose bold lines because they give the whole construction depth. I liked the idea of black and white. I drew on references from Art Nouveau and from the artistic approaches of Tim Barton,” says Alexandros.

Besides serving as a divider, the installation also acts as a sound absorber and as a decorative canvas, a “carrier”, as its creator describes it.

Depending on the season or the occasion, it can host different decorations, instantly changing and transforming the whole look of the space.

In the video below, Kostis talks to us about the décor of Kokkini Svoura:
