Kitchen Restaurant in the Weylandts Department Store in South Africa

“Kitchen” is a distinctive snacking place on the top floor of the Durbanville branch of Weylandts, a well-known South African chain of furniture and homeware department stores.

The dishes at “Kitchen” share a common denominator: fresh, local, seasonal produce. The owner of the chain supplies the restaurant with olive oil, lemons and wine from his vineyard in Franschhoek.

“Kitchen” is an interesting blend of the modern and the traditional, achieving perfect harmony in a warm, distinctive space.

One look at the restaurant’s sign, with its play on the “i” and a whisk, is enough to tell you that this space has been carefully designed down to the last detail.

The black walls don’t stop the space from looking bright! The contrasting white floor helps here too.

Rustic pine tables are paired with modern, minimalist “Ghost chairs” by Philippe Starck, which seem to disappear in the brightly lit space.

The style is casual. Comfortable furniture, the warm feel of wood and a crackling fireplace all reinforce that impression. Focus on just a few corners of the space and you could forget where you are and imagine yourself in the familiar surroundings of your own home.

The high ceiling makes it possible to use the ceiling itself to strengthen the personality of the space. Particularly interesting is the ceiling decoration in the middle of the restaurant: from a composition of white chairs hang paper cut-outs of cooking utensils, made from old sheets of musical notation.
