Whatever the size and style of the space we live in, indoor plants can be another “ally” in our efforts to improve and refresh the décor of our home.

The beauty and variety of indoor plants allow us, by choosing those that suit both our taste and the needs of the space, to feel closer to nature every day and to enjoy its positive effect.

Among the benefits our “green” housemates offer is their ability to absorb odours, germs and the radiation given off by electrical appliances from the air.

On the internet, or with a visit to a florist or plant nursery, you can learn more about the wide range of indoor plants, their varieties and the requirements of each type, so that you can make the right choice for you.

Here, then, are some ideas we came across on how to make use of the “beauty of nature” in the interior decoration of your home, along with a few attractive classic choices of plants.

Some attractive and well-known indoor plants are:

– Zamia. A hardy plant that tolerates very low temperatures, even when it gets no sun.

– Dracaena. It grows tall, gives a space an exotic feel and filters the air. It cannot withstand cold or strong light, however.

– Benjamin A type of ficus, whose lush foliage makes it easy to fill “empty” spots in a space. It needs plenty of sun, and it has the ability to absorb unpleasant smells.

– Kentia: One of the most stately plants for the home. Take great care with drainage and with the winter temperature, which should stay between 12 and 15°C.

– Philodendron: An excellent solution for dark spots. It does not like temperatures above 20oC.

– Spathiphyllum, also known as the peace lily because it resembles a lily. It comes in many varieties, is sensitive to light (like the tropical Yucca) and has the ability to filter microorganisms out of the air inside the home.

– Guzmania is a beautiful plant that combines two colours. It needs no special care and little water, because it is a tropical plant.

– The cactus, which is very hardy, absorbs the radiation of electronic devices and stays vigorous all year round.
