Areias do Seixo Hotel & Spa in Portugal

Less than an hour from Lisbon lies the Areias do Seixo Hotel & Spa, where pine trees, sandy beaches and the sea, combined with the hotel’s sophisticated interiors, create a captivating setting for a getaway.

Every room has its own charm. Every space rivals, in style, the beauty of the nature surrounding the Areias do Seixo Hotel & Spa.

The Areias do Seixo Hotel was designed and is run according to a thoroughly ecological philosophy and a strong environmental awareness. From the construction of the building that houses it to its operation as a hotel, the main aim is to minimise the burden on the environment:

• The ruins of the old poultry farm that stood on the site where the hotel was built were reused for the hotel’s paving.

• The building was insulated with cork in the wall cavities. In addition, the way the roofs were built made the building’s thermal insulation more effective.

• Water is heated and cooled using geothermal energy, an ecological system that makes efficient use of the temperature of the earth below.

Use of photovoltaics (under construction).

Composting of the hotel’s organic waste, which is then used as fertiliser on the land.

• Reuse of various materials left over from construction to make furniture and decorative objects, which have been placed in different parts of the hotel.

• Reuse of wood from trees that fell, and of materials that were damaged, in the storm that hit the area on 23 December 2009, to make furniture and decorative objects.

Organic cultivation of fruit, vegetables and herbs without the use of chemicals.

Reuse of stormwater, and water collection for use in toilets and for washing, as well as for irrigation.

• Creation and installation of an integrated application for the automated control of the electricity, water and drainage infrastructure.

The hotel’s facilities were designed by Vasco Vieira. The result is a harmonious composition that focuses on both the interior and the exterior spaces.

The design of the 10 rooms borrows colours and patterns from India and Morocco, blending them with a modern minimalist style and a sense of imagination to create unique settings throughout the hotel.

There are beds made from salvaged timber, distinctive golden cabinets, ceilings with timber beams and gleaming silver light fittings. The decor of the four villas and the penthouse, which can each accommodate up to 7 people, is equally distinctive.

Every room has a luxurious bathroom and a cosy fireplace that creates a warm, intimate and relaxing atmosphere, with views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Areias do Seixo also has a restaurant and a bar, which serve produce from the hotel’s own organic farming.
