A “Pedestrian Map” for Thessaloniki

ThessalonikiUnfolded is an experimental project that aims to give visitors to the historic centre of Greece's second city a better "guided tour".

A “Pedestrian Map” for Thessaloniki

The office NoScale has designed an alternative map to inform pedestrians, whether visitors or not, about the city’s cultural events: ThessalonikiUnfolded, which was presented at the Made in Thessaloniki exhibition at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art (MMCA).

It is an experimental project whose idea is based on enlarging the classic pocket map and placing it at selected points in the city, so that pedestrian visitors can easily find cultural and other points of interest around them.

As a basis for the design, it was decided that each installation would carry a map with a radius of 250 m. The first has been placed on a pilot basis in the square of the YMCA (Χ.Α.Ν.Θ.), the entrance to the historic centre. The map includes the new City Hall, the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the White Tower and the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.

The material used is sheet metal, which is recyclable and durable, and the structure also carries a QR code. Users can easily scan it with a smartphone and download to their mobile phone the complete mapping system of the city centre, enriched with images, sound and video, and gather more information on cultural events, temporary exhibitions, concerts and so on.
