The aim of this thesis was to examine specific lighting control systems and to develop a methodology for applying them in road lighting designs in order to save energy. The systems examined were INTELUX NG5, EBOX C25, CMH70W/T/UVC/U/942/G12, CMH150W/T/UVC/U/830/G12, osram powerstar hqi-t 250W/D E40 and, finally, Philips master HPI-T plus 400W/645 E40.
The thesis begins with a general introduction to energy saving in lighting, and in road lighting in particular. The second section presents the systems under examination, focusing mainly on their technical characteristics. This is followed by a detailed description of the experimental procedure, carried out to determine the electrical and photometric quantities relating to the systems examined, together with an extensive analysis of the experimental results.
Finally, the application of the systems under examination to specific road cases is studied. Taking into account the experimental results and a number of other parameters, a methodology is developed to calculate the energy-saving potential of the systems examined in the road lighting installations where each is applied. In some cases an economic study was also carried out. The thesis closes with a summary of the work and a presentation of conclusions.
