Wooden Hanger Coat Rack for the Hallway

A clever DIY project for organising coats, bags and keys in your entrance area using wooden hangers.

Wooden Hanger Coat Rack for the Hallway

The first thing we do when we walk into the house is put down our bag, our keys and our coat somewhere. That is why it is always useful to have a practical piece of small furniture that serves this purpose and helps us keep our space organised and tidy.

At “Better Home and Gardens” we found an interesting way to make a coat rack like this yourself, by recycling old wooden hangers of the kind we use in our wardrobes.

It is an easy, simple DIY project, even for beginners.

You will need:

– a rectangular piece of wood to serve as the base of your coat rack. You can buy one from any DIY store, get one from a furniture maker, or recycle old shelves.

– a few old wooden hangers.

– screws

– a small saw for cutting the wood

The steps are quite simple. Start by cutting the hangers, essentially removing one of their “arms”, lengthwise at the centre (but leaving a few centimetres’ distance from the middle), so that they sit flush against the wooden base. Turn each cut hanger upside down and you will have 2 hooks to hang things on: the metal hook and the wooden arm of the hanger.

Next, drill a pair of holes in each cut hanger, with a diameter to suit the screws you will be using. Work out the spacing between them, then mark the base and drill as many pairs of holes in the wooden surface as the number of hangers you want to fit.

On the “back” side of the wooden base, pointing towards the front of the future coat rack, you can drive in one of the 2 screws on which the hangers will be mounted.

Screw the hanger onto the first screw, then turn the wood over and drive the other screw through the second hole so that the hanger is held firmly in place. Repeat the steps for the remaining hangers.

Hang the base on the wall (you may need wall plugs to make sure your coat rack can bear the weight) and you’re done!

Tip!

If you like, you can

– paint the hangers in the colour of your choice,

– give the wooden base your own personal touch and style using the decoupage technique (you can find instructions for decoupage on wooden surfaces in the ftiaxto.gr video, which you will find here)
