Small… but Stately

Tips for those who envy the style of grand old houses but have to make do with a small apartment...

Small… but Stately

More than once, when we see an old, spacious, high-ceilinged, classic house, we are charmed by its character and its stately style, which evokes other eras.

Yet life in a city apartment makes the image of such a space seem “distant”. The limited space we usually have at our disposal, along with the more modern choices that dominate new buildings, steer us away from choosing this kind of decor for our homes.

These “limitations” should never deprive us of the elegance and grandeur that characterise the classic style. On the contrary, if we like it and want to follow it, we can achieve the effect with a few small touches.

How? We simply need to arrange the space with harmonious colours and tidy objects, while adding elements that will give our little “palace” the sense of luxury it needs.

For example, a suitable wallpaper pattern on part of a wall, or a stately woven textile, could become a focal point for the aristocratic mood of our decor.

The motif of the wallpaper we choose, or, even better, of a mural, can certainly help us expand the dimensions of our small space in every direction.

In addition, following the widespread practice that makes large mirrors some of the most welcome objects in “mini” spaces, we can be bold and create “aristocratic” corners in the living room or dining area as well as in the bedroom.

The right curtains and a classic light fitting can play a similar role in reinforcing the “aristocratic” character.

Finally, we should remember that by creating small corners with “classic” objects, we can achieve the look we want even if our home is small and includes other elements too (let’s not forget that “mix and match” didn’t become a decorating trend by accident).
