“Navy Style” Bedroom

Savvy Southern Style shows how a few accessory details are enough to give a bedroom a distinctive nautical look.

“Navy Style” Bedroom

Whether you are planning the decor of a guest room in a country house or a teenager’s bedroom, the transformation of a room into a nautical-style space, as presented by Savvy Southern Style, can be a real source of inspiration.

As navy style demands, the colours that dominate the room are white, blue and red, and “nautical stripes” take pride of place. Nothing has been left to chance in achieving the nautical look & feel. Every decorative element has been chosen to support and complete the nautical approach.

What is interesting is that the bedroom was not designed in this style from the outset. The furniture was already in the room. This clearly proves that a clear vision for a space and a few targeted touches can transform a room. It always helps, of course, to see the photograph of the room’s original decor in order to appreciate the difference.

The choice of cushions is of particular interest. Kim, the creator of the blog and of this room, chose three different types of cushion, varying both in size and in fabric design (with nautical stripes always in the leading role), including a long bench cushion.

The colour chosen for the walls is a light grey. The author of Savvy Southern Style took the idea from House Beautiful: it is Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter.

It is the individual elements chosen for the decor that make the difference in achieving the nautical effect: the coloured picture frames, the light fixture, the signs on the walls, the decorative pieces on the shelves, the blue wingback armchair and its cushions, the wooden clock, the painting with the island theme, the wooden oar.

Even the bed linen plays its part in achieving this result.

Of course, the biggest difference comes from the framed piece that dominates the space above the bed. Kim made it herself, using a vintage 1920s swimsuit that she bought on eBay. The frame she used was originally black with a grey background, but Kim decided to change its colour, painting the frame white and the background red, creating an even bolder result, full of nautical contrasts.
