Make Your Own Coat Rack

The décor of the entrance hall gives a first impression of a home’s style. The objects and furniture found in this space, such as a coat rack, shoe cabinet and umbrella stand, must be practical as well as decorative.

If you want to bring your personal style to your décor and get a result tailored to you, you can build your own entryway coat rack by following the instructions below, which offer a solution that is quick and easy to put together. The idea is inspired by the metal frames for clothes racks that you find in shops.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

– galvanized plumbing pipes (in the height and length that suit the result you want)

– plumbing fittings (2 elbows, 90°, and 2 flanges, i.e. base rosettes)

– primer for metal and wood

– paint for metal and wood (in the colour of your choice)

– paintbrush

– wooden base (a ready-made shelf from a shop, or a piece of wood cut to your measurements at a carpenter’s workshop)

– 4 furniture casters (available from a furniture-making supplies shop or a paint shop)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Prepare the wooden base by sanding it. Then turn the base upside down and screw the 4 casters on, evenly spaced around the edge.

2. Clean the plumbing pipes and fittings with soap and water. Once they are completely dry, screw the pipe sections and elbows together to form a “Π” shape, creating the frame of the coat rack. Screw on the flanges (base rosettes) last.

3. Measure and mark the centre of the right and left sides of the wooden base. Screw the flanges onto the points you have just marked, eyeballing it to make sure the pipes are straight.

4. Your coat rack is ready! If you prefer a more raw look, leave it as it is. Otherwise, brush on one coat of metal primer and wood primer respectively and, once it has dried, paint it in the colour you want. You will need to apply at least 2 coats of paint for an even finish.
