Lavender Colour and Scent in Home Decor

Its relaxing colour and scent are qualities we can use to enhance both the decorative and the functional character of our home.

Lavender Colour and Scent in Home Decor

Lavender (Lavandula) is a small evergreen shrub that reaches a height of 50–80 cm and bears purple-lilac flowers. It blooms mainly in June and July, which is also when it is harvested. It thrives in sunny, higher-altitude areas, which is why it is chiefly a Mediterranean plant.

The south of France has vast areas under cultivation, which have in fact been a favourite subject for many visual artists.

Known since ancient times, it takes its name from the Latin lavare, meaning “to wash”, as the Romans made particular use of it in their baths and for washing their clothes.

It is both an ornamental and a medicinal plant, with a scent that has calming properties.

So its relaxing colour and scent make an interesting element that we can use to enhance both the decorative and the functional character of our home. Here are some of the best ways to do so:

– Create relaxing spaces with lilac-purple shades on walls, curtains, furniture or decorative objects

– Choose it as a subject for paintings, whether original artworks or posters

– Scent the space with lavender candles, decorative items or potpourri

Tip: To create a decorative piece that doubles as a room fragrance, make a simple, elegant bouquet of dried lavender. Arrange the sprigs so that it can stand upright, and tie it with a ribbon of your choice.

Alternatively, you can make pretty decorative garlands with lavender balls (see the DIY idea we found on thediyclub.com, here).

– Plant lavender in pots, or use it to decorate vases or baskets for your indoor or outdoor decor.
