How to Design Your Garden

Ten key questions that will play an important role in designing a garden.

How to Design Your Garden

When the time comes to design our garden, even if we intend to turn to a specialist, we need to have settled on a few decisions that play a decisive role in its design.

Eleftheria Spantidaki (landscape architect) gave us a questionnaire that her clients must answer, so that she can record the particularities of the setting, their needs and their personal taste.

Even if you are trying to design the garden yourself, you will find the following questionnaire very useful, because it raises questions you may not have thought of.

Once you have given your answers, you will have the first material you need to create your garden properly.

Nevertheless, the help of a specialist is certainly recommended: they will evaluate your answers and propose suitable solutions that meet your needs, creating the perfect garden for you.

Questions:

1. What is the weather like? How much does it rain, and when? Is it windy, and how strong is the wind? Is it very cold in winter and hot in summer? Do I live in an area with a fair amount of humidity?

2. What can I see from my garden? Do I want to hide something, or do I want to shield myself from prying eyes?

3. Who will use the garden, and how?

4. Do I want to create paths, a seating area, a pergola or a small pond? What materials will they be made of?

5. Do I know whether my soil is good, and do I have enough good-quality water?

6. Do I want a classic or a modern garden? Should it attract birds, be fragrant, have colour?

7. Will my garden be a productive one? Do I need to create a vegetable garden and have fruit trees?

8. Who will be using the garden?

9. How much time do I want to spend on my garden?

10. How much money do I want to spend?
