DIY Shelf and Coat Rack from an Old Chair

Projects like this one, which we found in “Better Home and Gardens“, show that by looking at old furniture with a creative eye, we can cleverly find new uses for it, so that nothing goes to waste.

In that spirit, you can turn old café or kitchen chairs and the like upside down to make a lovely, original shelf and coat rack. It can find a new place in your home and lend it a vintage look: in the bathroom, in the kitchen, as an alternative bedside table, in entrance areas or hallways, and so on.

What you will need

– An old wooden chair with a back, like the one in the photo

– A saw

– Paint and a paintbrush

– Screws and a screwdriver

– Optional: faucet or cabinet knobs

How to make it

– Cut off the legs of the chair, leaving as many centimetres below the seat as you want the shelf to be deep. Of course, we should remember that the shelf is mostly decorative, so it is best not to count on holding items that are very wide or heavy.

– Turn the chair over and screw a rectangular piece of wood from the base of the chair to the back of the shelf. This creates, in effect, a “back” for the shelf, which will make it easier to mount on the wall (in practice, it enlarges the surface you will be screwing into).

– Paint the chair in the colour you like.

– Optionally, attach the 2 knobs to the part of the shelf where it joins the chair back. This gives you extra hooks for small items, bags and the like, and adds a nice touch to the piece.

– Mount your new shelf on the wall.

– Decorate it!
