Serving trays are useful not only for the purpose their name suggests, serving, but also for organising items in the kitchen and elsewhere, and for styling small pieces of furniture, sideboards and so on.
On Sweet Something Design we found an easy DIY project that gives a plain wooden serving tray a distinctive, cheerful and colourful look, and which can also be a source of inspiration for many other DIY projects.
What you will need
– A wooden serving tray of your choice, in the colour you prefer. (You can also paint it yourself in the colour you want, if you wish.) Tip: When choosing the tray, make sure it is deep enough up to the handles to hold the caps and the material that will fix them in place.
– Caps from soft drinks and beers.
Tip: You can paint the caps (as the creator of the project did) or leave them as they are, with the brands of the drinks and sodas showing.
– Water-based acrylic primer that waterproofs and seals the surface (available from paint and hardware shops).
How to decorate the tray:
Arrange the caps inside the tray until you are happy with the composition. Try not to leave very large gaps between the caps, which also depends on the size of the tray.
Next, pour the water-based acrylic primer over the caps inside the tray. To stop the caps from floating and tilting as you pour in the liquid, pour slowly and take care that it does not overflow in places.
You can also use a toothpick to reposition any caps that have shifted (avoid using your fingers for this), or even tap the tray on a surface to help them settle. When you are done, leave the tray to dry for 48 hours so that the acrylic hardens and it is ready to use!
Inspiration!
Following the same approach, you could decorate a plain tray with other materials of your choice: buttons, photographs, small sticks on washers, and so on! Just improvise!
