DIY Kokedama: A Hanging Garden

Via Design*Sponge, Aura Scaringi shows us how to make our own string garden.

What you will need:

1. A small shade-loving plant
2. A 7:3 mix of peat moss and bonsai soil
3. Dried moss/sphagnum (available from florists and garden centres)
4. Scissors
5. Cotton thread
6. Clear fishing line
7. Gloves
8. A bowl of water
9. Fresh moss

DIY instructions:

1. Remove as much soil as you can from your plant so that the roots are exposed. Be careful not to damage the plant.

2. Mix the soil. You will know you have got the proportions right when you can shape a small ball of soil that does not fall apart.

3. Shape the soil into a ball about the size of a small orange. If necessary, add a little water and knead it as if it were dough. Make sure each ball of soil has enough room to “house” your plant’s roots.

4. Take a sprig of the dried moss and wrap it carefully around the roots, forming a round, compact shape. Then wind the cotton thread around it (over time, the thread will break down).

5. Make a small hole in your ball of soil and carefully place the plant inside. Make sure the ball stays round by moulding the soil with your hands wherever needed.

6. Take small pieces of the fresh moss and press them onto the balls of soil, leaving no gaps on the surface. Then wind the fishing line around the balls as if you were wrapping a gift, leaving as much slack as you need to hang the ball where you want it.

7. Choose a nice shady spot, install a hook and hang up your little homemade planter.
