Looking for a versatile, affordable way to decorate your bedroom? We’ve found a striking solution that works as a headboard, adding colour and character to the space.
Best of all, you can make it yourself in about 3 hours, at little cost.
Choose rope in colours that contrast with the wall behind the headboard and go with the bed linen in your room, then get to work!
The materials you will need:
- 4 wooden battens cut to the length and height you want (2 sets, depending on the size of your bed)
- A saw
- A tape measure and pencil
- A drill with an 11mm bit
- 4 screws
- Rope in 2 different colours
- Glue or nail polish
Step 1: Think of it as building a wooden panel with legs. The top part, which will serve as the headboard, will be rectangular, but the vertical battens will have extra height (about 60 centimetres) so that they reach the floor. Measure and mark the battens to show where the joints will go.

Step 2: On the “rectangular frame” section, and before you assemble it, mark the points where holes need to be drilled for the rope to pass through. Leave a gap of at least 10 centimetres between the holes, and between the holes and the corners of the frame, and make sure the number of holes is even. Drill all the holes at the points you marked.
Step 3: Screw the battens into position to form the rectangular frame.
Step 4: Work out the length you need, then thread random pieces of rope through the holes and tie them with knots to the diametrically opposite holes, creating interesting patterns. Try to keep the rope taut.
Step 5: Trim the rope that sticks out from each knot and secure the knot with glue or nail polish.
Place your new headboard against the wall behind the head of your bed, and you’re done!
