If you want to renovate an old chair without paying an upholsterer to re-cover it, this idea is perfect. Dig out the old belts from your wardrobe, the ones that no longer fit or that you no longer wear, and get to work.
You can play with different colors, or use belts all in black or brown, depending on your own taste. You can also use the technique just for the seat, or for the back of your chair as well.

You will need:
- A chair with an open seat frame
- 20-25 leather belts, depending on the size of the chair seat you want to make.
- Wood screws
- A drill
- Someone to help you…
- Your creative spirit and plenty of patience!

Start from the center of the seat.
Screw the end of the belt to the inside of the chair frame, wrap it around to the outer side of the seat, pull it as taut as you can and screw it down on the opposite side.
In general, try to screw into a thick piece of wood so that it doesn’t split.
Tip: To make sure you position it correctly and symmetrically, use a tape measure and mark the opposite side of the seat. If your chair doesn’t have a square seat but a trapezoid one, like the chair in the photo, make sure you space the belts wider apart at the front.
In the same way, screw down 2 more belts parallel to the first.
Now start working perpendicular to the belts you have already fixed in place.
Before screwing each belt down on the opposite side, weave it through the other belts, as you can see in the photo.
Keep adding belts, sometimes perpendicular to the first ones and sometimes parallel, until you have gradually covered the whole seat.

In the end, the underside of your chair will look something like this…

And the top will look something like this…

And if you like the idea, take a look at this approach we also found online. It should set your imagination working on how you can play with colors, how you can apply the idea, and so on.
Good luck!
