Kamat & Rozario Architecture, a practice based in Bangalore, India, has created a particularly clever and practical set of bookshelves from precast concrete manhole rings.
Beyond serving as bookshelves, the concrete rings were chosen as an inexpensive way of marking out and dividing a single open space, while also giving it an industrial feel.
The rings are made of concrete and are “bound” together with bolts and metal brackets. Three wooden shelves, aligned with one another, have been placed in the centre of them. The bottom shelves simply rest on the curves of the cylindrical rings.

The idea is also of interest as an application for food and drink venues such as cafés and bars, which want to adopt an industrial style in their interiors.
