Remember when we showed you how to hang posters on the wall using hangers?
The DIY project we’re suggesting for decorating your walls is based on the same concept. The idea is to create a wooden structure, a kind of grid, from which wooden hangers holding our posters can be hung.
With a few pieces of wood and a few wooden trouser hangers, we can create a warm, intimate corner of photographs, artwork or posters that adds depth and interest to a bare wall.
This solution is especially appealing for decorating your living room, behind the sofa; for the bedroom, behind your bedhead; or for a child’s room, for hanging children’s drawings.
What you will need for the project:
• 6 wooden battens in the dimensions you want, depending on the wall you wish to cover
• Wooden trouser hangers
• Paint
• Wood glue
• Decorative knobs
• Sandpaper, and paint or varnish for wood
• Screws and a screwdriver
How to make it:
• Arrange the battens in an irregular grid. Lay the vertical pieces first, then rest the horizontal pieces on top. Use wood glue to hold the structure in place.
Screw the top (horizontal) pieces of wood to the vertical pieces of the structure. To hide the screw holes, you can fill them with wood filler.
• Once the filler and glue have dried, sand the wooden grid to smooth its surface and prepare it for varnishing or painting, which you will need if you want to change the natural colour of the wood you’ve used. Leave it to dry for 24 hours.
• When it has dried, work out where you want to hang the hangers. Mark the spots and put nails or decorative knobs there.
Then you can go ahead and hang the grid on the wall.
Once the structure is up, hang the posters from the wooden hangers and then place them one by one on the structure.
You’re all set!
