A House Inspired by Frida Kahlo

Jessica and Daniel Heckscher dreamed of owning a home away from the bustle of central Stockholm, surrounded by lush green gardens. The couple made their dream come true by decorating their new house in Algo Saltsjöbaden, east of Stockholm.

The small corner house, which recalls a Mediterranean villa, was the oldest of the cottages to be renovated.

The space is inspired by the paintings of Frida Kahlo. Blue is dominant everywhere. The blue of the sky and the sea has been chosen for the walls as well as the floor. The unexpected colour combination is bold and unusual, yet it manages to create a sense of a familiar, welcoming and warm space.

Comfortable armchairs, cosy pouffes and plenty of cushions in shades of blue and grey contribute significantly to this “warm” result in the living room.

The house has kept the authentic atmosphere of the old cottage, but its elegant decoration means that even its modern elements seem “classic”.

In the kitchen, they chose not to weigh the space down with lots of wall cabinets, creating a functional island instead. The painting resting on the counter complements the modern style and adds colour to the wall, which is clad in white tiles. The countertop is made of marble and the cabinets are plain white. What catches the eye at first glance is, on the one hand, the yellow pendant light and, on the other, the yellow metal elements that adorn and support the island around its perimeter. The modern stools, of course, do not go unnoticed either.

In the bedroom too, blue dominates, combined with a wood-clad wall. Modern light fittings hang from the ceiling, and here, as in the rest of the house, no paintings have been hung on the walls. Instead, the paintings simply lean discreetly against the wall, supported by shelves, sideboards, chests of drawers and so on.
