A 2,000-square-foot building, a former factory, has given way to a dream loft that is now both home and workplace to a couple in Los Angeles, California.
The home of Philip Sumner and Leona Laurie, which we came across on apartmenttherapy.com, is truly striking in its simplicity. We liked the term “warm modern”, used to describe the style followed in decorating the space.
Wood and exposed brick walls dominate throughout, preserving the charm of the old factory space. The lighting, the utilities and all the materials in general contribute in their own way to this effect.

The loft is designed on an “open floor plan” principle, with continuous spaces and doors kept to a minimum. Although there is so much room, Philip & Leona avoided filling it with a lot of furniture, keeping to a philosophy of simplicity and a “clutter-free” environment.
The décor is quite minimal, yet the result is especially welcoming, with the warmth of the wood, the vintage three-seater sofa and the leather Eames armchair.

A space like this may seem not just dreamlike but something we could only ever have in our dreams. Yet the thinking and the materials that characterize this “warm modern” decorating style are something we can borrow for smaller spaces too.
As the owners advise in the house tour article on apartmenttherapy.com: “When you think about how you want to set up your space, you have to be honest about what you really want from it, and in that case the money and energy you invest will have a positive impact. Approach everything in the house with the ‘ideal’ in mind.”
