Tea Bag Art

The Armenian artist Armén Rotch’s breaks new ground with her distinctive brown-and-yellow compositions, which use tea bags as their raw material.

In her works, the tea bags look like pixels, creating soft, indistinct lines and shading that build rhythmic compositions. The pieces give off, as you would expect, a scent of tea, and allow for variations in colour that together recall an autumn landscape.

This intense, repetitive gathering of tea bags, to which Armén Rotch’s has devoted herself for more than 20 years, conveys an air of meditation and reverence, much like the tea ceremonies of different cultures around the world.
