The Work of Sculptor Antony Gormley

For 40 years, Antony Gormley has been creating sculptures that explore the relationship of the human body to space, within a framework in which the viewer is transformed into the “spectacle”.

By using himself as the subject of his experiments, Gormley turns his own subjective viewpoint into a “collective projection” for the public.

The artist increasingly draws people into taking an active part in his works, as he did in CLAY AND THE COLLECTIVE BODY in Helsinki and in the famous ONE & OTHER in London’s Trafalgar Square.

His work has been widely exhibited in Britain, with solo shows at the Whitechapel, the Serpentine, Tate, the Hayward Gallery, the British Museum and White Cube. At the same time, it has a “wide reach” outside the UK, with many exhibitions and participations in countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Mexico, China, Australia and the United States of America.

Born in London in 1950, he has been honoured with the Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999 and the Award for Sculpture in 2007.

Antony Gormley is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an honorary doctor of the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus College, Cambridge. He has held the title of Royal Academician since 2003, and has been a trustee of the British Museum since 2007.

On his website you can see all of his highly interesting works, as well as short documentaries filmed while they were being realised.
