The Towada Art Centre in Japan commissioned the architecture firm Mount Fuji Architects Studio to design and create an art installation for the building’s outdoor space.
The “work”, In Flakes, consists of a series of ‘street furniture’ pieces.
The architects placed a series of “mirrored benches in varied configurations” around the cherry trees that surround the forecourt.
Each bench is made up of two or more folded stainless steel elements, arranged in such a way that they also provide the structural support the piece needs.
The mirror installation stands out for the play of reflections it creates, thanks to the gleaming finish of the stainless steel surface.
The final result is striking: reflections of nature’s changing seasons!

As the architects themselves point out, “in the city of Towada, leaves drift through the air in autumn, snowflakes in winter and flower petals in spring, and in summer sunbeams filter through the branches of the trees”.
In essence, with the In Flakes series of street furniture, Mount Fuji Architects Studio sought to capture the changing colors and forms of nature.
