On Tuesday, 1 February, after 18 months of work, Google launched its new venture, Art Project, in collaboration with 17 of the most famous art museums around the world.

Drawing on Google’s much-discussed Street View technology, Art Project lets you wander through the various spaces of the museums, while also presenting around a thousand works of art by 486 artists.

The result is truly unique, as the museums provided detailed guidance and expertise at every step of the concept, from the selection of the works to advice on the best angle from which to photograph them.

With a single click from your home computer, you can now “travel” and admire works such as Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” or Vincent van Gogh’s “The Bedroom”.

Besides detailed information on each work, the application also offers a “Create your own collection” function, which allows users to build their own collection of specific works of art and add comments to share with their friends. This can be a useful “tool” for school and university students working on group projects.
