Echomold

An eco-friendly, handmade paper-pulp product for covering surfaces.

Echomold

Εchomold is a handmade product made from paper pulp. At first glance it looks like concrete, which makes it appealing. It is very lightweight and rigid. What really sets it apart, however, is its eco-friendly character, as it is made from recycled paper.

It was created for the third “Αλλάζω…αλλά ζω” (“I change… but I live”) Panhellenic Competition of EDIE, where it won first prize as well as the special “Eco Object” award from Vakalo College.

An Echomold is any geometric solid formed by moulding pulped paper. Here it takes the form of a brick. It has many applications… One of them is surface cladding, where its composition improves the acoustics of a space. It therefore has sound-insulating (“echo”-insulating) properties. This paper block is treated as a structural material, so it can be used to build a variety of structures, either on its own or combined with other materials, such as a bench… Echomold is creation…

Echomold was conceived by interior decorator Marina Tsopoli, a graduate of the Department of Interior Architecture, Decoration & Object Design at the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens. Making things by hand is part of her daily life. She draws inspiration from matter itself and often experiments with materials such as wood, thread, cork, rubber and paper. Her creations are based mainly on the reuse of objects, or parts of them, so that they take on a multifunctional character.
