The PDF you can download from the link below is a monthly newsletter published by GREENPEACE in October.
We are publishing it because we applaud GREENPEACE’s efforts, and also because it sets out the reasons why we should use energy-saving lamps rather than incandescent ones.
We choose energy-saving lamps because…
They use 4-5 times less energy than ordinary incandescent lamps
They last 8-12 years
Using them cuts annual electricity costs by around 12 euros per lamp
• By using one energy-saving lamp, we spare the atmosphere around 120 kg of carbon dioxide emissions a year, since it produces only 30 kg of carbon dioxide
• They seem more expensive than incandescent lamps – but if we calculate the total cost (purchase and electricity) over 5 years of use, it comes to just 23 euros! (We assume an average purchase price of 8 euros plus around 3 euros a year in electricity)
They are now available in a wide variety that can meet almost every need and taste
Let’s not forget that the better the quality of the energy-saving lamp, the better its light will be
They don’t affect the temperature of the room – they give us exactly what we needed when we bought them: light
• A switch to energy-saving lamps in Greece would significantly reduce the need to build new polluting power plants, thereby reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels
They are climate-friendly
We don’t use ordinary incandescent lamps because…
90% of the energy they consume is turned not into light but into heat. The planet is overheating: we don’t need extra warmth
They last 1 year at most
Using them “inflates” the electricity bill from DEH, the Greek power company
Average use of an incandescent lamp burdens the atmosphere with around 150 kg of carbon dioxide a year
• They seem to cost next to nothing – but if we calculate the total cost (purchase and electricity) over 5 years of use, it comes to 78 euros! (We assume an average purchase price of 0.60 euros plus around 15 euros a year in electricity)
• We may think they give better light and come in a wider variety – but we probably haven’t looked very closely at energy-saving lamps lately
