Feng Shui & Lighting

Feng Shui is an ancient Eastern practice that balances and harmonises the flow of energy within our space (our home or office) in order to improve our lives.

Feng Shui & Lighting

According to Feng Shui, the layout of a space, the placement of furniture, decorative objects and other elements, colour and lighting all affect your level of happiness, health and success.

There are various schools of Feng Shui, each using different methods to assess the flow of energy and recommend “remedies”.

The practice adopts principles of “healthy design” that are easy to put into effect. Lighting is recognised as a critical and important element for good “chi”, or energy, and the list of suggestions below will help ensure that you have the best lighting for the most favourable outcome.

1. Warm, Colourful Lighting

Feng Shui practitioners recommend using incandescent bulbs exclusively for a warm and welcoming space. This, of course, runs counter to today’s drive to save energy. In fact, the warm colour that incandescent bulbs emit makes us look healthier and feel happier. Finally, other bulbs, such as halogen, are better for reading or for highlighting specific areas.

2. Multiple Light Sources

Use more than one light source to avoid harshness and shadows. Multiple light sources create a pleasant, positive energy in the space.

3. Choose Luminaires to Shape the Mood

Feng Shui incorporates five different elements: air, water, metal, wood and fire. Luminaires made of paper or fabric soften the energy, which makes them suitable for bedrooms, while metal luminaires create a more active atmosphere and are therefore recommended for offices or kitchens.

4. Use Uplights to Generate Positive Energy

Light the dark corners and sharp edges of a room with luminaires that direct the light upwards. Good “chi” can be created in a short time simply by lighting these areas. Another “remedy” for dark spaces is a mirror, which multiplies energy and light.

5. Dimmers Create a Pleasant Atmosphere

Using dimmers lets you control the atmosphere and, by extension, your mood. At the same time, dimmers have the added benefit of saving energy and extending the life of your bulbs.

6. Use Red, the Most Auspicious Colour

Find the heart of your home (a central spot) and hang a red crystal or a red lantern to activate your space and generate positive energy.

Depending on your décor, you can use a red luminaire instead of a lantern. In Eastern countries the colour red is revered and considered very lucky. Whatever you believe, the energetic nature of the colour cannot be denied.
