The award-winning architectural lighting design firm Focus Lighting, based in New York, has recently completed the design of the Cooper Square Hotel in the revitalized downtown Manhattan area, in collaboration with architects Antonio Citterio (interior architect) and Carlos Zapata (exterior architect).
Thanks to the aesthetic impact of its presence, the Cooper Square Hotel redefines the concept of the boutique hotel in New York. An elegant blend of classic Italian modernism and carefully considered architectural lighting highlights the architectural elements and details of a refined design.

The exterior of the building is defined by its glass facade, where a combination of transparent and solid glazing, together with the interior light glowing from every room, gives the building the form of a sculpture. The facade is in constant “motion”, changing its appearance every evening.
Inside the building, the architectural lighting remains discreet, in many cases concealed, enhancing the architecture and the refined atmosphere. In the lobby entrance, the dark wood-clad walls are marked by vertical recesses of concealed lighting. In the restaurant, low-level lighting creates a warm atmosphere, while the choice of warm tones of red and brown produces a rich interior environment.

In a similar vein, the bar stands out thanks to its cladding of light-reflecting surfaces. Focused ceiling lights combined with a line of LEDs highlight the zinc-clad bar wall, while the glass surfaces of the adjacent walls reflect the light, making the space “shine”.

Elements of this warm, rich atmosphere are evident throughout the hotel’s interior and exterior spaces. The carefully considered architecture, the attention to detail in the furniture design, the choice of specialized cladding materials and the carefully considered architectural lighting give the Cooper Square Hotel a prominent place in downtown Manhattan.
