Designers often set out to come up with original ideas that are both beautiful and functional. Jon Fraser‘s chair does exactly that, and it is made from just 80 metres of rope.

The finished piece stands out for its natural look and simplicity, yet making it is not as simple as it appears. Making the seat functional as well as decorative was a real challenge, because rope is not particularly rigid: it had to be soaked in polyurethane resin and formed into 20 separate units, which repeat to give the seat its shape.

Designer Jon Fraser explains that the project took a week of work to complete, which confirms how complex it is to make.

The rope has kept its natural texture and colour. This may make the surface a little harder and could cause some skin irritation, but the problem is easily solved by placing a soft, comfortable cushion, a piece of fabric or similar on top.

The “Ropey Chair”, as it is called, is suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces, as long as it is placed in a relatively sheltered spot to prevent the material from deteriorating.
