Trailer for the documentary
This is a research project by Anastasios Koupantsis and Alexandros Michalakopoulos, two children of Greek emigrants who grew up in Germany, where they are studying communication design at the University of Düsseldorf. When they were given the chance to visit a country and look into what was happening in its design scene, they chose Greece without a second thought.
“In recent years we had been reading more and more about creative studios from Greece in German magazines. So we decided to devote our time to researching Greek design, to better understand the thinking, personality and ideology of each designer. We decided to create the first Design Report in documentary form, running 74 minutes, which is something like a trailer for the book that will be published at the end of the year.”
When they began their research in January 2010, they decided they wanted to talk to large and small studios, to young and established ones, and to designers working on their own. “In the end we settled on the following studios and designers: Beetroot, Cannibal Fonts, Chris Trivizas Design, Designers United, +Design Magazine, Dolphins, G, Indyvisuals, K2 Design, Theodora Mantzari, Mousegraphics, Parachute Fonts, Π6, Red Creative, Talc Design Studio, The Design Shop, Togehter Design, Tria, Tsevis Visual Design, Yellow Beans.”
Design Report Greece examines the history and evolution of design in Greece, while the two young researchers look at the contemporary local graphic design scene without losing sight of current political and social events. The documentary will premiere in Düsseldorf as part of a two-day event on 1 and 2 July. There will also be an exhibition of work by the Greek studios, along with talks and discussions with some of the designers who took part in the project, such as Haris Tsevis, Indyvisuals and Panos Vassiliou of Parachute, who will try to give an idea of Greek design in particular. The documentary will also be screened in Greece in September.
