“CONtradition screens” room dividers

MICROmacro Lab draws inspiration from traditional Chinese patterns made from rebar.

“CONtradition screens” room dividers

Traditional Chinese patterns inspired the studio MICROmacro Lab to create these distinctive room dividers, designed as folding screens and made from the rebar normally used on building sites.

The rebar is shaped, welded and transformed into the “CONtradition screens”. There are many different designs, which deliberately contrast with the usual forms found in Oriental decor.

“The use of construction materials complicates the ‘dialogue’ between ancient Chinese patterns and contemporary furniture design,” says the MICROmacro Lab team. Using these materials creates contrasts between raw, “hard” materials and the elegance of traditional Chinese designs. So instead of “contradiction”, we get a playful twist that leads to “ConTradition”, a play on words that is nonetheless entirely fitting for this creation, in which the new and the old are combined constructively.
